When betting stops being a choice
The recognised warning signs, the tools that work regardless of willpower, and where to get help in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and across Europe. Written plainly, because the people who need this page are rarely in the mood for nuance.
The clearest warning signs are betting more than intended, betting to recover losses, hiding the extent of it from people close to you, and continuing after it has caused problems with money, work or relationships. If several of these apply, the amount involved is not the relevant measure — the loss of control is. Help lines are listed at the bottom of this page and are free to signal.
The recognised signs
- Needing to bet larger amounts to get the same feeling.
- Restlessness or irritability when trying to cut back.
- Repeated unsuccessful attempts to stop or reduce.
- Preoccupation — planning the next bet, reliving the last one.
- Betting when distressed rather than when an opportunity exists.
- Chasing: returning another day to get even after losing.
- Lying to family, friends or others about the extent of it.
- Risking or losing a relationship, job or opportunity because of it.
- Relying on others for money to relieve a situation betting caused.
These criteria come from the diagnostic literature on gambling disorder and are used, in some form, by every major help organisation. Four or more within a twelve-month period is the usual clinical threshold, but the threshold matters far less than the question of whether you want to stop and find that you cannot.
Tools that do not rely on willpower
| Tool | What it does | Where to set it |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Caps what can be added over a period; reductions apply immediately | Account settings at each bookmaker |
| Loss limit | Caps net losses over a period | Account settings, where offered |
| Time-out | Locks the account for 24 hours to 6 weeks | Account settings |
| Self-exclusion, one operator | Closes the account for 6 months or more, irreversibly | Account settings |
| Multi-operator self-exclusion | One request covers every licensed operator in the jurisdiction | GAMSTOP (UK), BetStop (AU), Spelpaus (SE), Cruks (NL) |
| Bank blocking | Bank declines gambling transactions | Most UK and EU banking apps |
These work because they remove the decision at the moment it is hardest to make. Setting a deposit limit while calm is a different act from trying to stop while chasing a loss — and only the first one is a fair contest.

If you are worried about someone else, the same services advise family members. You do not need the person's permission to signal and ask what to do.
Where we stand
CONSENSUS publishes analysis. It does not accept bets, does not tell anyone how much to stake, and has no interest in anyone betting more than they intended. Everything else on this site assumes the reader is doing this by choice and within limits they set themselves. If that has stopped being true, this page is the only one that matters.
Check any of this against our record
Every signal CONSENSUS publishes carries the bookmaker odds fixed before the event starts and the settled result afterwards — including the drawdowns and the losing runs. The running total is on the front page and every entry is in the log.
